And now for something completely different...

"They" is the weather forecast on ARD for example, and they talked about late afternoon. I don't know where you live but I doubt you have late afternoon there so you probably cannot tell if it is the right name for this kind of storm.

As far as I know it is called a hurricane ("Orkan" in german) when wind speed is > 120 km/h

So we have a difference concerning the meaning of the word "hurricane"^^ I thought it'd be more that just a normal storm low with strong winds. Normally, a hurricane means a cyclone with windspeeds of more than 150kph that developes under special circumstances in the upper atmosphere. Basically meaning pressure and temperature differences between layers of wind currents. Quite similar to tornados in developement but on a far larger scale.
But when you refer to it as the equivalent to "Orkan" you're perfectly right. It will be a hell of a mess when it hits...

By the way: What did you mean by
I don't know where you live but I doubt you have late afternoon there
?

What we are actually expecting
Sorry, i misunderstood this as "what we are actually experiencing" and therefore gave the wrong answer.

And you are right, the translation of "hurricane" is not unique. So we have another false friend here, don't we? ;)

False friends suck! :autsch:

:D

Let's just agree that we address "Orkan" as "strong storm" or "cyclone" and "hurricane" (as the phenomenon) as "Typhoon". Then it's crystally clear what we mean ;)
And besides, we use a nice japanese word. Hmm... Gotta polish up my japanese someday.

Typhoon reminds me of pro wrestling. In the WWE (former WWF) there were two wrestlers weighing some 400 Pound each: Earthquake end Typhoon and they formed a tag team called "the natural desasters".

Very funny those two. Always impressing when a 400 pound wrestler makes a dropkick to someones face.

Which already proves that wrestling is only show-off and no real fighting. Any human being would be instantly crushed to a mushy, red substance when hit by such a monstrous amount of muscle ;)

Amazing, though, that one of them weighs about 4 times as much as me *g*

Well, 58 Kilos. That's 116 pounds in the metric system. So roughly a quarter of one Wrestler ;)

I hope your size corresponds to your weight.

And be careful today: don't leave the house without an anchor

I'm a breathtaking 169cm's of height^^
Gotta leave you now... If I don't return until tonight, call my parents ;)

A second ago a coke can shot past me on Euston Road - damn it's windy. One of my more tender friends had to walk in my slip-stream, otherwise she would have been gone with the wind.

Slip stream is "Windschatten" in German. Don't know if there's anything similar on Star Trek, though.

I'm about 230 pounds right now, heavyweight with no doubt. But I'm okay with it. Though I'm going to lose about 20 pounds during the next months. Well, that's my plan at least, considering my experience it should take me 4-5 months to get there.

Btw, Earthquake died last year :(

Ah, THAT's how they reach Warp 13!

*whistles* 58 doublepounds, 1,81 triplefeet...

Hm, maybe wrestling isn't the healthiest of professions?

Yes I know Earthquake alias John Tenta died. Of course a man with such a weight is always in danger of heart attacks and similar. Same happened to Yokozuna (314 Kg) in the age of 34 :(

That's nothing to do with the "sport" itself. Everyone of those men is or was some kind of professional sportsmen: football, Weightlifter, Wrestler (amateur => Olympic), Karate and other fighting styles, Bodybuilders and so on. Earthquake was a (third class) Sumo wrestler earlier.

So they all more or less stressed their bodies for years and years what leads to injuries and multiple general problems. When they fall from the apron (the floor of the wrestling ring) to the concrete floor, there's always a chance to get injured. When a move isn't done accurately it may happen that a 300 pound coloss lands on his neck instead of his backside.

But that's the same with rock'n'roll, gymnastics or figure skating.

Let's just concur that life itself is bloody dangerous ;)
I just experienced that... Thanks to my grappling hook I survived the gusts outside. Now I'm back in the warm cozy room with nothing serious to do in the next hours *joy*

How do you prepare for the big storm today?
It was interesting to get to work today by bike. I didn't even remotely have the feeling of getting blown away, but it was a tough ride. The way back should be easy though. We have our delayed Christmas dinner tonight, no idea yet whether I go by bike or by bus, probably the latter considering I will be wearing a fancy dress.

I am a bit worried that my travel plans for the weekend might not work out as they should. From Cambridge to Stansted by train in the afternoon, then by plane to Berlin; and back again on Sunday. I have heard rumours that trains here in the UK have a tendency to be delayed or even cancelled, just because there are leaves (!) on the tracks. No idea how they handle gales.

yay, they stoped all trains in NRW, i think this will be pretty interesting.
one of my friends has a new roommate-the tree which stood in his garden oO

My mother lives on the 8th floor of a big house and feels a little unsafe. I don't think anything will happen but the sound of the wind there was well audible even though the phone.

I will take a bath now.

Yeah, but you can't turn away the facts. Probably more then 95% of all pro-wrestlers take Painkillers and a guess of mine that steroid-abuse isn't exactly uncommon. The early deaths are too common in contrast to other sports, it can hardly be just "bad luck". Eddie Guerrero is of course the most popular example because..well he was most popular of the wrestlers that recently died. Heart failure at 38 years isn't quite normal.

The storm's pretty strong here, a "branch" (if you can call it that, must have weighed some houndred pounds, crashed our fence and our dogs refuse to stay in the safe "kennel" (it has been one, for us it's just an extension to our house with my old sofa in it;) ). At least they've calmed down a bit but if it keeps howling like that I've got to take them in. And they are probably the most exact definition of an outdoor dog, they love the freedom they have in our garden (and the adjacent"piece" of forest) and don't like to be in the house for too long.
