And now for something completely different...

Damn, my english isn't taht very good even more :( A few months ago it was much better, as I had worked with the portugese and brazilian guys...

I think that here are a few people from other countries. That won't be many, but there are some. It will be har, too, to show them this thread here. I don't think that they will find it easily. Most of them stay in the trade-section on this board, I think.

and that is the Problem^^
how to inform them, if we even don't know any names? (except of the one I know, but he comes only to the board for Median Realese Anouncements)

If they don't come out of their own threads because of not understanding any german they wont find such a thread any time.

So we have to find out where they are more active, bu7t that should be nearly impossible due to the fact we don't know anyone...

I don't know, too. As I purposed this idea at the staff, I thought that they'll be agrreing with me and start something like an Information about this at the mainpage. Maybe we should try to put this somehow in our signatures and tr to get them on thy way out of their holes ;) If we can get this point, this thread and my idea will grow up easily.

drago has done the first step, which normally should be mine ;) but I slept :D

yeah more English in my life... now even in my favorite internet forum.

In fact HP1 was a book for children and you recognize that more if you read it in German than otherwise. If you read it in english you do not recognize the very childish (??) language at once. Of course an english native speaker would think the other way round.

When you compare the different book from 1-6 in english you really notice the developement of syntax and vocabulary. The first books appear to be more childish. But there is a good reason. Rowlings audience gre along with the characters depicted in the novels. So of course a diferent type of language is applied.

But to books in the priginal language in general. When I was about 15 I started to read books in english, mainly Pratchett. And I have not stopped since then. By now I read all books that are by english authors in the original version. Comparing both versions is often a pain. In the Discworld novels soo many of the puns are just plain lost in translation. For dubbing in movies it is similar, but often the german voices are same as good or as I must say in the case of Marge Simpson even better.

English Thread! Marvelous! Great way to prove to my mother that posting in a board ist likely to improve my knowledge...

OK, not really. But might be I give it a try.

Uh, might be I missed the theme as I slipped over page 2 (using standard configuration, that is). What's the talk about just now?

Figured I just jump in here, waving my banner with the "HERE I AM BEING YAWGMOTH" - letters printed boldly on it, just to draw attention to me, as I am wont to do in every part of this board and my life :D .

Having made this impression of a complete jerk to you, yours truly will klick the "post" - button now, awaiting flames.

I seem to be in to good a mood today, folks.

Simon

Heyho, evil Twin is in da house!

:D

:hy: Smoky, Yawi and all the others... Seems there are some people besides me who pay attention to this thread. Fine fine...

Actually we are talking about translations or rather synchronizations in cinema, tv and books, maybe games too. As far as I'm concerned: I read a book for relaxation. I have to read a lot of texts during my job so when I start reading in the evening it's something "simple" I don't get a headache over. Therefore I prefer the german version of most books, movies and so on. If I need a dictionary while reading a book it's too much stress instead of recreation.

Yes, currently I am writing this at home. Might well be that next time I am sitting in the school's library; nothing is certain.

By the way, my evil Twin is Yawgmoth. When my post is signed with his name, you can be sure that he is around, writing in the colour of the singing. Otherwise, it will be me himself, innocent, loveable Simon  .

:D

Oh, what shouldst thou want in my domain?

Simon

EDIT: Oh my god, evil Twin is a green link! I shall be damned  .

btw... the most annoying translation I heard lately was the text from the german version of the musical Aida, music written mainly by Elton John.

/Edit: I missed something....
At the end I have one question to drago. I just wondered whether someone in this forum would be interested in joining a Mafiagame , which is completely held in English. Interested?
I don't even know what mafia is :D

Oh, translations? Translations stink. Simple and truthful.
My first book to read in English language was "The Magic of Xanth" by Piers Anthony. As some might know, this was a match made in heaven: Piers is by very far my favourity author now, you should try him.

Anyway, the reason for choosing this book was that we had a german copy as well - so I could compare the texts without having to rely on a dictionary, which would have been awful (as drago sad farther above).

The problem with that: Xanth is a world entirely consisting of puns...and well, how could you possibly translate the violent animal "Attila, the Hunny Bee" in german, for example?

Trust me, it's not pretty. After three chapters I threw the german book aside, disgusted, and took to reading the English one solely. Without a dictionary. I'm far too lazy for that.

As it is, I have read about a hundred English books by now, half of them by the great master Piers himself. I am best in my English course at school, because he is such a marvelous writer - if his storys wouldn't be as captivating, I would have given up reading them.

What a book can teach us...truly, reading equals education. Any reading.

There you go. Beware though, it's german.

Sandstroem, i would definately be up for it. How about a little Co-Modding? If more people would be interested, that is. I learned playing Mafia on an english site and quite frankly, i just translated it for us here. Thinking about it, i know no german place to play (Besides our little steady growing PlanetDiablo-playerbase, of course). Well, no good one -.-

Definitely, I'm in.

Aaaaww, just before MY Link in the Crypt...by the way, drago in our GERMAN Mafia would be quite a boon, too, don't you think? (and I mean the original sense of the word...maybe).

Interested!

You could bring some from your experienced Mafia - page, they could teach us flock'o n00bs how to play corrrrectly.

I would also be glad some time to offer a few ideas for a new Mafia - but I fear that I am not as up to being a moderator as Quiddel was.

Simon

EDIT: taro, why don't you join our ranks for the league of deranged gentlemen (or such)? Or are you in, and I am proved as Darth Chaos once more?

Yes, sure, when I asked the question about the game, I already thought that you would be the right person for setting up the setup. What a sentence.

And back to Harry Potter, not just the lanuage improves and gets older, also the content of the book gets older and especially violence in this book grows.
Perhaps we should go to the media and tell them that HP is responsible for everything. :D

 The pure thought of you joining the MiseTings.Forums (a M:tG-forum, btw) makes me want to laugh. If you can't even handle some random flamers like PureEvil, you definately don't want to post there :D Ah, the memories. As an answer to my first post there i was called a "cumbucket", whose opinion is nothing more worth as "a fucking tanker full of whorespit". That was from a moderator over there. Then the flaming commenced. Good times.
Sure, feel free to register there but don't say i didn't warn you. Ah yeas, my nick is Tarsinion over there.

Grab yourself a comod. Quiddels biggest mistake was that he turned to Leech too late.

Well, if it can be EXPECTED, it shouldn't be a problem. Here usually you don't get flamed at, except when posting in the basti0n. (OK, these are no flames in comparison, wadawadawada).

Never said I'd like to register...I said, let them come to us and teach us how to play!
Oh, and thanks for the invitation. Do they have PicUps there :D ?

Yes, that would definitely be my solution. Just thinking on "who" and "when". Not in the testtime just now, but we have time, don't we.
Oh, and now that I think of it: Choosing you would be a BAD idea, wouldn't it :p ?

Even better: customizable avatars, custom titles and signatures. Spam away.

Guess who

Indeed. 'nuff said.

So, you can choose freely?

BORING, I say! What is spamming without the constant threat of a dwindling postcounter, without the PMs by mods, without the fear of a ban?

Indeed. 'nuff said.

Strange that we should agree on a subject quite so easily...

Simon

You don't simply get banned there. Stupids get weeded out by the users. If we have enough, we start Survivor and poll the idiots. The winner gets three month off, the rest gets some other amount of ridiculous fun treatment.

An old one from 2005 (Hilarious first post from Arc. A must-read!). This was also the last one. We didn't need one since then. :D

Also, we ARE talking english, so we are kinda ontopic. Kinda. I guess, we'll better stop taking over dragos thread.

For me, it is quite equal if I read a book in english or german.
But understanding an english film, when the characteres got a really bad accent is very hard for me.
I am totally specialised on the good old Oxford english :)

In the Blub forum, I am looking for some very or not so very creativ person, who can help to improve my signature... I do not like it anymore ... ;(
